Myanmar Cultural Heritage Sites | Yangon and Bagan

Ancient Cities is a short reportage focused on documenting the Sea of 10,000 Temples in Bagan and the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, Burma.  For the longest time, I was captivated by the cultural, natural heritage as well as the religious aspect of Burmese people. While living in Thailand an opportunity to travel to Burma on assignment presented itself and while most of my time was spent documenting the breathtaking beauty of ancient pagodas located in Bagan.

From the 9th to 13th centuries, the city was the capital of the Pagan Kingdom, the first kingdom that unified the regions that would later constitute modern Myanmar. During the kingdom’s height between the 11th and 13th centuries, over 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were constructed in the Bagan plains alone, of which the remains of over 2,200 temples and pagodas still survive to the present day.

Shwedagon Pagoda | Yangoon

The Shwedagon Pagoda officially named Shwedagon Zedi Daw and also known as the Great Dagon Pagoda and the Golden Pagoda is a gilded stupa located in YangonMyanmar. The 326-foot-tall (99 m) pagoda is situated on Singuttara Hill, to the west of Kandawgyi Lake, and dominates the Yangon skyline.
